{"id":3855,"date":"2012-07-09T10:04:28","date_gmt":"2012-07-09T10:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crimeculture.com\/?page_id=3855"},"modified":"2012-07-09T21:09:49","modified_gmt":"2012-07-09T21:09:49","slug":"ari-scott-zechlin","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.crimeculture.com\/?page_id=3855","title":{"rendered":"Interview with Ari Scott-Zechlin"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Sherlock Holmes Flash Fiction Competition Winner<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>8th July 2012 \u00a0<\/strong>[Read Ari&#8217;s story <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crimeculture.com\/?page_id=3777\">&#8216;The Problem of the Overtired Undergrad&#8217;<\/a>]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crimeculture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Ari.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3857\" style=\"margin-top: 2px; margin-bottom: 2px; margin-left: 8px; margin-right: 8px;\" title=\"Ari Scott-Zechlin\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crimeculture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Ari.jpeg\" alt=\"Ari Scott-Zechlin\" width=\"154\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;m\u00a0from Seattle, Washington.\u00a0 We have a reputation for both rainy days and vampires, yet one of these is decidedly more accurate than the other.\u00a0\u00a0Right at this moment, I&#8217;m eating homemade grapefruit popsicles and marathoning Dan Harmon\u2019s Community with my housemates and our pet dog. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been writing for about four years. \u00a0I usually write YA fiction, sometimes with fantasy thrown in.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m about to start my senior year at college, which means my big fictional work in progress is my thesis project \u2013 a Gothic fantasy novella exploring how much of our identity relies on other people.\u00a0 However, I\u2019m also in the middle of co-writing a Jim Moriarty fanfic for BBC\u2019s Sherlock with a friend.\u00a0 In the future, I would love to write stories for the older end of the YA spectrum (17 to early 20s), since I think it\u2019s a group that\u2019s often overlooked, as well as stories set in the Pacific Northwest, a region which I absolutely adore.<\/p>\n<p>I read and watch a range of crime fiction: \u00a0some favorites are Agatha Christie\u2019s Hercule Poirot (and the David Suchet adaptations), Jeff Eastin\u2019s White Collar, and Stieg Larsson\u2019s Millenium series. \u00a0My favorite Sherlock Holmes mystery is \u201cThe Speckled Band,\u201d as it was my very first introduction to Sherlock Holmes.\u00a0 When I was in 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0grade, my mom showed me the Granada adaptation with Jeremy Brett and I absolutely loved it.\u00a0 She started reading the original stories to me that very night before bed, starting with the one I\u2019d just seen on our television.<\/p>\n<p>I was inspired to write &#8216;The Problem Of The Overtired Undergrad&#8217; while spending my semester abroad in northern England this spring. \u00a0My two somewhat codependent flatmates across the hall woke me up every single morning by spending half an hour yelling at each other to get out of the bathroom.\u00a0 Of course, I figured that my own daily hell was nothing compared to what Mrs. Hudson would have suffered at the hands of Holmes and Watson, and so thought it only right to tell Mrs. Hudson\u2019s side of the story for a change.<\/p>\n<p>I was very excited to find out I&#8217;d won the Sherlock Holmes Flash Fiction Competition!
