John Huston, 1941), Raymond Chandler\u2019s\u00a0<em>Farewell My Lovely\u00a0<\/em>(<em>Murder, My Sweet<\/em>, d. Edward Dmytryk, 1944), \u00a0James M. Cain\u2019s\u00a0<em>Double Indemnity\u00a0<\/em>(d. Billy Wilder, 1944; paired with Lawrence Kasdan\u2019s 1981 take on Cain\u2019s plot,\u00a0<em>Body Heat<\/em>), John D. MacDonald\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Executioners\u00a0<\/em>(<em>Cape Fear,\u00a0<\/em>d. J. Lee Thompson, 1962), Donald Westlake\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Hunter<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Point Blank<\/em>, d. John Boorman, 1967), David Goodis\u2019s\u00a0<em>Down There<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Shoot the Piano Player<\/em>, d. Francois Truffaut, 1960), Patricia Highsmith\u2019s\u00a0<em>Strangers on a Train<\/em>\u00a0(d. Alfred Hitchcock, 1951), Elmore Leonard\u2019s\u00a0<em>Rum Punch<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Jackie Brown<\/em>, d. Quentin Tarantino, 1997), William P. McGivern\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Big Heat\u00a0<\/em>(d. Fritz Lang, 1953), and Jim Thompson\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Grifters<\/em>\u00a0(d.
